A Brief Overview of the Vespion Anatomy

A/N: I've gotten a lot of questions about the Vespion species in my story, so I'll be answering them here, as well as going a bit more in depth as a way to get back into writing since I've been away so long. I'll maybe do more of these down the road for the different species in the alliance.

The Vespion are a species of sapient plant life that occupies their homeworld of Vespion 0, as well as eight other terraformed planets. They are physically very fragile, but extremely intelligent.

They generally range in height from 4ft 8 to 5ft 3 (142-160cm), and have very thin bodies with a larger head, reminiscent of a flower. Their legs and arms evolved from roots and branches respectively, with two toes at the end of the long legs, and three long fingers at the end of the arms.

Their outer skin is made of mostly cellulose, and of the minerals consumed with water. It stabilizes the form of a Vespion and acts as a weak exoskeleton, while the inside of their skin is lined with plates of woody fibers that dictate the position of the joints. In between the outer skin and the woody plates are several layers of color-changing cells that dilate and contract based on emotion. The effect is blotchy in appearance, as there are some portions of the body that are less reactive than others. These places on the skin vary widely between individuals, and it is where the photosynthesizing cells are more heavily concentrated.

Since Vespion get all of their energy from photosynthesis, they mainly require mineral rich water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight for survival. While a Vespion's feet still retain a small amount of root function, and can function as such when a Vespion is starving, the most efficient way for them to get their nutrients is to drink it.

Though Vespion do most of their breathing through their skin, which is covered with tiny stomata, there is also a large cavity inside the torso of the body that connects to the tiny "mouth" on the lower half of a Vespion's face. The lining of the cavity is also densely packed with stomata, and is sometimes used as a makeshift lung when a Vespion does something strenuous. This cavity is also where almost all of the water is absorbed into the body.

Just behind the cavity is a primitive "heart" that pumps sap throughout the body, though the sap vessels are more concentrated around the brain. The rest of the body inside of of mostly glucose stores, although the body does have a few weak "muscles" that make movement possible, though they don't make quick movement possible.

Another use for the internal cavity is the ability to produce speech. There are several flaps in the throat, as well as a few small tendrils inside the mouth that function as a tongue that make this possible, although their voices are very high pitched. The mouth itself isn't very flexible.

Vespion also have two eyes in a similar arrangement to humans, though they are hard like an insect and typically very dark in color. There are flaps of skin that can be "blinked" in order to wipe them clean, though the eyes themselves don't move in their sockets. Their eyes are quite large in relation to their overall head size, and they have full color vision.

There are several ear holes on a Vespion's body, and they are very small so as to not be noticeable at first glance. There are several on each hand, as well as down either side of the neck.

A Vespion's reproductive organs are located on their head. They have a three sex system in which there are seeders, fertilizers, and hosts. Seeders have dozens of translucent tubes that produce small, hard seeds. Fertilizers have flower-like organs that produce pollen from their centers. Hosts have several rows of pods that are similar in appearance to little shells. They can open, and are filled with nutrient dense tissue, so that a fertilized seed can be placed within, and a young Vespion will grow inside.

Vespion are born very small, and they spend the first few years growing rapidly, and reach physical maturity quickly. Vespion are also able to regenerate limbs rather easily, unless the skin has been burned, or the injury is on the head or torso.

Vespion communicate emotion through their color changing skin, and the more intense an emotion is, the darker or more pigmented a color will become. When a Vespion feels lots of different things at the same time, their coloring appears in different colored blotches across their skin.

The color gradient is very nuanced, just like emotions, and since Vespion faces don't really have expressions, it is difficult for others to interpret if they don't have full color vision.

There is some variation in appearance based on genetics and geography, such as skin texture or baseline color, and some varieties are more suited to different climates.
